Battle of Midway

Due to the fact that American code-breakers had deciphered the Japanese secret military code, they knew that an attack was going to be made by the Japanese military near the Midway Island in the middle of the Pacific ocean.  The battle was fought between American and Japanese planes and aircraft carriers, June 4-7, 1942.

The battle was a major turning point in the war in the Pacific.  In the end, Japan lost four aircraft carriers to the one U.S. carrier.  It was the first Japanese naval defeat since 1863.

This battle effectively ended Japanese expansion in the Pacific theater of war.
